Canada must stop backing Haitian leader: Open letter

An open letter on Monday stated that Haitians have legitimate demands in their anti-government protests and urged Canada to stop backing the president.

“In recent months, Haitians have demonstrated their overwhelming opposition to President Jovenel Moise. There have been massive protests and multiple general strikes demanding Moise leave,” said the letter posted at Canadian Dimension. “We consider their demands legitimate.”

“The undersigned call on the Justin Trudeau government and Canadian state, [and] members of the ‘Core Group’ [France, Brazil, Germany, Spain, EU and Organization of American States] – to stop backing a corrupt, repressive and illegitimate president Haitians massively reject,” it said, adding the Canada has provided financial, policing and diplomatic support to “the unpopular government.”

The open letter was signed by a total of 152 Canadian residents, including journalists, activists, professors, lawyers, and ex-deputies.

The Haitian anti-government protests demanding Moise’s resignation began in July 2018. The demonstrators are protesting socio-political and economic conditions in the Caribbean country.
