Prince Harry, family meet S. Africa’s Desmond Tutu

JOHANNESBURG

Britain’s Prince Harry, wife Megan and their baby on Wednesday met with former South African anti-apartheid campaigner, retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu during their royal visit to the country.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the retired cleric at his foundation, the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, according to photos and a short statement posted on the foundation’s official Twitter handle.

“Among gifts presented by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was a set of framed photographs of Princess Diana’s meeting with Nelson Mandela in 1997,’’ the foundation said in a tweet with an accompanying photo showing the gift being presented to the royals as they smiled.

Tutu, 87, is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a retired Anglican archbishop of Cape Town.

He rose to prominence in the 1980s for his strong role in the opposition to apartheid rule in South Africa.

The royals, who are now on their third day of visit to the Southern African country, also visited South Africa’s oldest mosque in the city’s suburb of Bo-Kaap on Tuesday.

They also met and danced with a group of South Africans who are helping young vulnerable people learn how to surf and swim.
