Azerbaijan: Armenia should fulfill int’l obligations

NEW YORK

Armenia should fulfill its international obligations instead of wasting time with attempts to misguide the international community and its own people, Azerbaijan’s top diplomat said on Sunday.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly at New York, Elmar Mammadyarov said that if Armenia gave up its “aggressive and hostile policy” in the region, it would overcome a serious political, economic and social burden.

“Rather than wasting time on attempts to mislead the international community and its own people,
Armenia must drop its lousy attempts to prolong the unsustainable status quo and faithfully
comply with its international obligations,” said Mammadyarov.

Adding that there had been no progress in the resolution of the Upper Karabakh conflict since last year’s general assembly meetings, he stressed that the unresolved conflict continued to undermine international and regional peace and security.

Upper Karabakh is internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan illegally occupied by Armenia through military aggression since 1991.

The Armenian occupation of the historical Azerbaijani lands led Turkey — which sides with Baku in the conflict — to close its frontier with Armenia.
