Turkish boxer Surmeneli becomes world champion

ANKARA

Turkish boxer Busenaz Surmeneli earned gold medal in the 2019 Women’s World Boxing Championships in Russia on Sunday. 

Surmeneli beat her Chinese opponent Liu Yang in the 69-kg final in Russia’s Ulan-Ude to be the world champion in the category.

The 21-year-old Turkish athlete won her first world title in seniors.

Separately another Turkish athlete, Elif Guneri bagged silver medal in Ulan-Ude after her loss to Russian boxer Zenfira Magomedalieva in the 81-kg final.

Earlier Sunday, Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu claimed silver medal in the Women’s World Boxing Championship in the 51-kg category after losing to Russia’s Liliya Aetbaeva.

Started on Oct. 3, the Ulan-Ude 2019 will end with the closing ceremony on Oct. 13.
