Disney+‘s new series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, created by Emmy Award-winning Jessica Gao, is a fun and adventurous superhero series produced by Marvel Studios. Created by renowned comic writer Stan Lee and illustrator John Buscema, the character She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) first appeared in 1980’s Savage She-Hulk #1. But on the basis of character as inspiration, Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson‘s, one of the greatest writers of the Victorian Era, it is inspired by the gothic work “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. This book, which is among the world classics that questions the duality of human nature with its literary depth and multi-layeredness, talks about the conflict of the soul and the body, and also touches on today’s social and psychological concerns in terms of plot. Of the Disney series the character of She Hulk, who undertakes a feminist mission; She approaches social issues such as women’s sensitivity, justice and gender equality from a critical perspective. Jessica Gao states that the series deals with the fundamental contradiction of “to be or not to be a superhero”, while also covering modern-day themes such as casual sexism and online dating, and that there is a female-dominated production team behind the camera.


Lawyer Jennifer Walters gains the Hulk‘s superpowers after an unfortunate accident with her cousin, Bruce Banner. Jennifer will now live the complex and adventurous life of a super-powered She-Hulk lawyer.

Another important detail in the series is; Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the audience and being aware that she is a superhero character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These two aspects of the character were an important part of British-born American writer and comic artist John Byrne‘s 1985 graphic novel “The Sensational She-Hulk.” The concept of the Fourth Wall is a concept first introduced by the French philosopher Denis Diderot in the 19th century theater. It is used as an auxiliary tool for comedy by addressing the audience directly. This phenomenon, which developed with the movement of realism, impresses the audience with the friendly and sympathetic attitudes of Jennifer Walters character.


In each episode of the series, we see a popular superhero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there are also surprises to delight Marvel fans in the post-credits scene at the end of the episodes. Although the series presents a superhero story to the audience, we see that the episodes actually progress in a way that consists of different stories.

The main character continues the battle for justice both in the field of law and in the community and social context. In addition, the character of Jennifer Walters directly breaks the fourth wall and communicates with the audience through meta humor.
